The Council of Representatives, consisting of 120 members—at least one from each state—is elected by and acts on behalf of the Association’s membership to coordinate nationwide advocacy efforts. The Board of Directors, elected by the Council, exercises overall direction and control over the affairs of the Association including the formulation of NARP’s program and policies. Officers (the Chair, Vice Chairs, Secretary and Treasurer) are also members of the Board of Directors. The duties and requirements for each office are described in the Association’s bylaws.
Timetable
Nominations open January 1, 2010
Deadline for submission of Candidate Information Statement, March 31, 2010.
Elections by the Council of Representatives take place April 28, 2010.
Procedure
- Candidates submit their Candidate Information Statement electronically directly to the President/CEO.
- President/CEO checks membership status and forwards that information together with CIS to the Nominating Committee
- Nominating Committee verifies compliance with attendance requirement with Secretary
- Nominating Committee presents its findings to the National Council of Representatives at its Spring meeting.
Requirements (extracted from the bylaws)
Officers & Directors
A first-time candidate must:
(a) Be a dues-paying member in good standing of the Association.
(b) Have been a member of the Council of Representatives, the Board of Directors or an Officer for at least one two-year term. The Board of Directors may waive this requirement for exceptional candidates by majority vote.
(c) Have submitted a candidate information statement on a form approved by the Board of Directors.
(d) Be a registered voter.
Incumbents running for re-election to the same or a different position must:
(a) Have attended at least two thirds of the meetings of the Board of Directors and at least two thirds of the meetings of the Council of Representatives held during the Director’s or Officer’s current term of office unless otherwise excused by a majority vote of the Board of Directors. For purposes of this paragraph, any per son who was elected as an Elected Director in the immediately preceding election is considered to be seeking re-election even if he or she resigned subsequent to such election.
(b) Have remained a Member in good standing of the Association during his or her term of office.
(c) Have submitted a candidate information statement on a form adopted by the Board of Directors.
(d) Have remained a registered voter.
Representatives at Large
First time candidates must:
(a) Be a Member of the Association in good standing prior to his or her election.
(b) Submit to the Nominating Committee a candidate information statement on a form approved by the Board of Directors.
(c) Be a legal United States resident and at least 18 years of age.
Incumbents running for re-election must:
(a) Have remained a Member in good standing of the Association during their term of office;
(b) Submitted a candidate information statement on a form adopted by the Board of Directors;
(c) Have met the minimum meeting attendance requirements established by the Board of Directors.
